City Council Approves NC Budget
May 19, 2009By Ken Draper
The City Council on Monday approved a budget package for neighborhood councils that includes $45,000 in annual funding and $145,000 in banked funds. The City Clerk will continue to manage NC elections with volunteer and outreach help from councils. As of now, 2010 NC elections will run as scheduled. The restoration of the $45,000 resulted from heavy drilling by Councilmembers Alarcon and Hahn of the Clerk’s office and an agreement that the Department of Neighborhood Empowerment would help fashion a plan for neighborhood councils to help with volunteers and outreach to help offset the loss of election funding from the Clerk’s budget.
The package also includes a request for the Controller to evaluate the expenditure controls used by the DONE and NCs to ensure the propriety of spending decisions made by neighborhood councils.
On the hot-button debate between the City Council and the Mayor, dollars for the LAPD to replace officers lost to attrition, the council found the dollars when the County projected an additional $20 million in property tax revenue. For more see the Los Angeles Times report.
